Establishing an online presence has rapidly become a part of daily life. Everyday millions of people check e-mail, do banking, telecommute to work, pay bills, take classes, engage in social networking and perform a variety of other activities over the Internet.

Whether it is for a few minutes or for several hours, hopping online has become a part of most everyone's daily routine. We have come to rely upon Internet access in order to get things done.

Unfortunately the criminal elements of society have quickly realized the lucrative opportunities to be found online due to this reliance. As a result they have established their own dark online presence.

Even if you are only online for a brief period of time you can still be at risk. It has become more important than ever to secure your online presence to protect yourself from the dark elements lurking across the Internet.

WHY YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL

The "dark side" of the Internet rears its ugly head in many forms. Hacking is a prominent problem nowadays and there are all kinds of motivators why someone would want to peek into your computer and get a glimpse at your information.

Identity thieves lurk in the corners of the web and they would love nothing more than to steal your persona in order to exploit you for monetary gain or for other sinister purposes. Thieves want to take your credit card or bank information so they can use it for their own financial gain. Some hackers want to take control of your computer and use it to commit crimes so their dirty deeds aren't traced back to them.

There are also predators online that go online to scope out victims. It is a large world out there and the Internet helps predators track victims. This criminal element is adept at finding ways to get their victims to trust them with a cleverly created fake persona.

It is important to be very careful with your information online so strangers cannot find you in your "offline" life. Unfortunately despite all of the benefits the Internet offers, it has also provided the perfect virtual playground for these dangerous criminals to find people to harm.

The Internet is a very public place and many don't realize that anything placed on the Internet can be found with a simple web search and it is there for an indefinite amount of time. If there is personal information you'd rather most people not know about you, either now or in the future, it is important to keep this in mind with any information you offer up on the web.
