US elections 2008: The appeal of John McCain

The presidential election for 2008 was an election that truly was decided on the mantra, change. Both mainline presidential candidates professed some sort of change. However, John McCain based his change on himself while Barack Obama based his change on what we can do as a country.

Whenever I listened to John McCain speak what I noticed about him is how many times he used the word I. "What I did as a veteran." We appreciate that John, what will you do for us now? "What I did for us as a senator." I'm not sure what you did for us as a senator, who is the "us," John. So, number one reason I did not vote for John McCain was his self-righteous attitude.

My number two reason I did not vote for John McCain is his anger. He looked and acted angry much more often than he looked and acted relaxed or at ease. Body language can tell a lot about a person and of what I saw of John McCain I did not like.

The third reason I did not vote for John McCain is how he ran his campaign. I saw a man who seemed to be out of touch with his own campaign strategist. Perhaps that is why he seemed to be so angry. I may be wrong, but I do not think John McCain in his heart really wanted to run a negative ad campaign, but he did, and it cost him my vote.

The fourth reason I did not vote for John McCain is his senate voting record. John McCain is a student of Reagonomics. Reagonomics is an economical philosophy that looks good on paper but fails miserably when applied in real life. And the short reasonable explanation for that is greed. McCain believes in his heart most people are good and that corporations would trickle down money to workers. It never did.

The fifth reason I did not vote for McCain is his inconsistent relationship with President Bush. McCain calls himself a Maverick, but his voting record shows he is very much a right wing republican, siding with bush 91% of the time (when he voted).

The sixth reason I did not vote for John McCain is his philosophy on foreign policy. First and foremost the idea that the far right wing republicans push that we must win this war in Iraq or we will lose our freedom as we know it is a false premise. Second that terrorism is somehow holed up in Iraq and if we contain it there we will contain it everywhere is a false premise. If Tim McVeigh showed us anything it is terrorism can sprout up anywhere, and that is how we should look at terrorism.

The seventh reason I did not vote for John McCain is his relationship with lobbyists. Don't get me wrong,
