For most of us our animals are important members of the family, and they are treated with the compassion and respect they deserve. Sadly, others view animals as disposable possessions, which they are free to abuse or neglect. Animal abuse is a serious crime, and we can't allow innocent, trusting animals to suffer at the hands of violent, uncaring owners. What do you do if you suspect animal abuse? Take measures to right the wrongs inflicted on these defenceless animals, and be the voice that cries out for justice, for these innocent, silent victims.
MAKE IT YOUR BUSINESS
Far too often we are reluctant to get involved because we have been taught to mind our own business. While this may be true if your grown neighbors are engaging in a verbal argument of a personal nature, animal abuse isn't something to turn a blind eye to. Make it your business, and do something about it. Even if you're not positive, and merely suspect based on the animal's appearance, living conditions or personality, there's no harm in making a report on your observations. If your concerns are investigated, and found to be unmerited, at least you cared enough to ensure the well being of the animal. More often than not though, your instincts will prove to hit the nail on the head. You may also think you don't need to take action because surely someone else has already made a report. If everyone felt this way, nothing would be done, and the animal would continue to suffer. Even if three reports have already been made, a fourth only reinforces the severity of the situation, and helps to build a case against the abuser.
INSIST ON BEING HEARD
When you make a call to report suspected animal abuse you would expect someone would come to investigate rather quickly, but this isn't always the case. Don't allow this defenceless animal to get placed on the back burner, and continue to suffer. Remain diligent in your efforts, and continue to make calls until action is taken. Call on a daily basis, or twice a day, until they come to recognize the sound of your voice. Keeping your concerns at the forefront of their minds will ensure an innocent victim doesn't get forgotten. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, and if you must squeak to the point of being an annoyance, let the squeaking commence. After all, you're not trying to get the city to remove the old tree on your boulevard, a life is at stake here.
