Sikkim is a land locked state which is hidden in the deep Himalayas and is a home to the world's third highest peak, Kanchenjunga and its capital is Gangtok. Depending on what exactly is it that one wishes to experience in Sikkim, one can visit either in the summer or in the winters. March to May in summer and October to December in winter, are the best times to visit Sikkim. Although Sikkim is steeped deep in the Himalayas, it is accessible quite easily either by road or by air. There are two ways one can reach Sikkim; one is via Nepal and the other via India. It is about 180km from Bhadrapur in Nepal, which is an hour's flight from capital Kathmandu. Other way is much straightforward and easier. Nearest airport to Sikkim in India is at Bagdogra, from where one can either get a taxi ride of about 4 hours (approx. 120km). Sikkim government tourism board also operate helicopter flights between Bagdogra and Sikkim, which take about 20 minutes.
Geographically as well as from a tourist's point of view, Sikkim is divided in four regions, east, west, north and south. Depending on what one is interested in, one can cherry pick the destinations and popular tourist attractions in either or all regions of Sikkim. Gangtok can serve to be a good starting point, being the capital city. Being closest to Gangtok, one can begin the trip from the eastern region. Popular destinations in this part of the state include the Enchey Monastary, the Permanent Flower Show and the Do-Drul Chorten Stupa. The handloom and handicraft centre in this part is also a place worth visiting, especially for the one who is interested in purchasing local artefacts and souvenirs. Saramsa gardens are also a very beautiful spot to visit, where one can see tropical orchids and other variety of exotic flora in full bloom. It is maintained by the government's forest department. Tashi view point, built by the late king of Sikkim, Sri. Tashi Namgyal, is about 4km away from the capital, and has gained popularity due to its breathtaking scenery and a clear view of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Many other places of interest are in close proximity from Gangtok; however, many notable ones would require travelling for an hour or so by road. Private transport can be arranged with relative ease; otherwise public transport is also available. Tsomgo Lake is also a popular attraction which is about 2 hour drive by bus from Gangtok.
