made or rendered by the owner. Another option is to purchase antique for both its vintage and reusable appeal. Check your local antique store for everything from Art Deco vases and jewelry boxes to Victorian wardrobes. Or, why not think really green and get some clean air plants from your local green house?
Green Kits:
Why not take it a step further and not only give green, but help green while you're at it? Fill a recyclable box with energy-saver lightbulbs, ecologically-friendly cleaners (like Eco-ver), reusable shopping totes, reusable water bottles (Sigg), earth-friendly cosmetics (Burt's Bees), and ecologically sound consumables (Tom's of Maine), to help out your green-spired friends.
Charities:
While the inclination might be to go for the obvious green charities, like The Arbor Day Society or The Nature Conservancy, try thinking locally instead. Literacy projects provide language and reading education in many communities, and this is often the foundation of decreasing waste (being able to read curbside recycling instructions, for instance). Community garden projects often help provide not only plant life but food and vegetation to families who would prefer to grow their own food, and programs like Freecycle and Goloco.com which help communities recycle and ride-share often rely on donations to stay afloat. For a list of the non-profits in your area, try seeking your local chamber of commerce for a list and determining the best charitable fit from there.
Green gift giving is often more a matter of imagination, research, and creativity. With a little effort, you can have a fantastic holiday season without selling out your conscious in the process! Happy holidays.
