How to address Internet problems

by Daniel Bergman

Created on: November 09, 2008

I installed a cable modem for a first-time broadband user a few months ago. As I was walking out the front door, I heard the customer call out, "Oh, I better shut down the internet, I'm waiting for an important phone call." Years have come and gone since the introduction of broadband, and I've long since forgotten the days of dialup. Although there may still be a large number of strictly dialup users, this article mainly focuses on broadband issues. To that end, there are but a few key concepts all broadband users should know, they include: intrusion prevention, spyware/adware, and computer networking.

The term "intrusion prevention" refers to blocking hackers' attempts to gain access to your computer's files via a network connection. The first thing everyone needs to know is that broadband connections are always on and connected to the internet. The only effective way to keep hackers out is by using a firewall. There are a number of firewall programs on the market. However, Windows xp and vista already come with their own firewall installed. To activate it, open the control panel, click "Windows Firewall," and select "on."

It is also important to understand the nature of spyware and adware. Spyware watches what you do on the internet, where you go, what kind of things you like to buy. It then sends that information to a third party. Adware, however, is a bit different, it turns blazing fast internet into blazing fast pop-ups. Spyware/adware programs are extremely invasive in nature and can drastically impede a system's performance. Software programmers can make money by including spyware and adware in their programs. This concept allows them to offer their software to the public at no charge. So, remember, [non]buyer beware - free stuff can be hazardous. Every internet user should run a spyware remover from time-to-time.

Many homes have more than one computer. Unfortunately, most broadband modems have but one connection. A network is a solution that will allow multiple computers to share a single broadband connection. The most practical device for a home network is a wireless router. Many computer users are savvy enough to set up their own network; however, others may need to enlist the help of a network professional. Regardless of who sets up the network, the addition of another device between the computer and the internet will increase the likelihood of a communications failure.

Re-establishing the connection to the World Wide Web, in the event of a failure, can be quickly accomplished with one simple procedure. The first step is to unplug the power from the router and the modem. Step two, plug power back into the modem. Step three, wait five minutes. Step four, plug power back into the router. This procedure is effective for most connection losses.

In my experience, these three issues are the most common; understanding them has greatly improved my internet experience. The internet is the greatest destination to share in the world's wealth of knowledge, I hope this short article provides the basic road map for your journey.
