I was known as KBKF-5855 back then,
at least to as far as the FCC was concerned.
But to my friends on the road,
I was Wanderer 1 from "Hatter Town"
The Wanderer name was given to me by a friend
because there was no direct route to anywhere.
I was known for my short cuts
which could add days to a trip.
I never got lost, not that I would admit it if I was.
I followed the sun during the day
and the moon at night
but the most fun was when neither was around.
I wasted a lot of time, to be sure.
Once I could have gone to Florida on I-95 in 17 hours.
Instead it took close to sixty
But then I never would have seen the ponies of Asateague.
The moon was full then at 2:00 AM
sitting on the beach listening.
The sky was clear except for a cloud that rested on the beach
I heard them first then they danced out of the mist.
I sat on the helipost of a trauma center more than once;
Waitng for our next arrival - PCP and Alchohol
He came and went and then I was back
to watch the dawn.
I am older now and don't wander as much.
My son came home from Iraq and said, "Dad ...
I have always wanted to see the Grand Canyon on a motorcycle
I said, "Son ... I thought I was the only wandering one."
