You don't have to go over-the-top and crazy when it comes to decorating your home for the holidays. Sometimes something simple is all you need to convey your welcoming warmth. If you focus on decorating your front door, as opposed to other places around your home, you guarantee any visitors are going to see your little bit of holiday cheer.
Wreaths
The easiest method for decorating a door is as old as doors themselves. Any kind of wreath, from real flowers for Easter to fake eyeballs for Halloween, can be hung from a door in a matter of seconds. Wreaths are also the easiest form of decoration to buy. Almost any grocery, drug, or home store is sure to have an ample supply, especially around the Christmas season.
Signs
If you don't care for wreaths, but still want a simple door decoration, there are plenty of items to choose from. A delightful sign is perfect for, literally, telling guest they are "Welcome" or that you hope they "Have A Happy Holiday." If you have a little extra time and creativity, you can even make a cute door sign yourself. Remember that decorative signs come in almost any kind of picture, words or silhouette shapes.
Bows and Garlands
Bows and garlands are also quick and easy items for door decoration. If you want something a little less boring than a single bow, try mixing and matching assorted size and color bows down the center of your door or hang a zigzag of garlands around the frame.
Presents
You can make a mock present if you have a bunch of durable gift wrapping paper, or extra shelf paper, lying around. Carefully cover your entire outer door with the paper, and secure it with strong tape on the inside of the door. Glue or tape a large bow on the outer door, in the corner. You're door is now a fancy, gift-wrapped decoration.
Mini-Family
If you have young children at home, have them help you create decorations for the door. Have the child draw and cut out simple, gingerbread-men shaped figures, about one foot tall. Make one to represent each member of the family and use crayons or markers to color in the details.
Hang the mini-family members on the door as a welcome sign. You'll need to laminate the pictures if you want them to last for long in the outdoors. You can use them as is if you're just decorating for a short period of time, such as for a party.
Musical
If you want to add a little musical melody to your holiday cheer, think about incorporating some fun tunes into your door decoration. Bells, door harps and chimes can be strung from a doorknob or hung on the door. Each time the door open or closes, their delightful sound will ring out.
