Having a "green" Christmas this year is in style. It's a perfect time to give "green minded" style gifts. Like you, many of us know someone who is getting interested in trying to go "green". With just a little imagination you can select gifts that are within the "green guidelines" and are still very thoughtful and fun gifts.
Here's a few ideas to get you started.
If you know someone who is really thinking about going "green " but doesn't know where to began, put together a starter pack. Try to include a list of ways they can go "green " in their daily lives. Give daily items that will help them go green, like cloth tote bags, eco friendly household cleaners or pet products. Names and web sites addresses of local vegetable and fruit stands that use or sell "green " products. Include catalogs with " green living " in mind. Books that show you how they did it in the old days will help give them ideas on working " green living " into their daily lives. Place your starter kit in a reusable container, or a picnic basket. Make extra copies of the "Going Green In Your Daily Life list " to pass out to anyone else there who might be interested.
Here are some practical gifts with the "green gift giving" spirit in mind.
People love getting gifts cards, they are easy to use, most are re loadable and they allow the recipient to choose for them selves. Giving gift certificates for local companies that practice going green, movie passes, museum passes, gas cards, memberships, tickets to local events, subscriptions to "green " publications are easy gift ideas. Make up your own gift certificate that entitles a service for the recipient to get.
Mini window herb garden with a herb book dictionary and recipe book. Also house plants, they increase beauty and clean the air. Try giving more exotic plants like a dwarf citrus tree or a venus fly trap, now there's "green pest control" for you! Gardeners would appreciate getting compost makers, they run on man power and bring valuable nutrients back to the soil.
You could also do other starter kits like growing mushrooms, making bread or growing fruit and nut trees. A First timer's canning starter kit with extra supplies.
Think about small non electrical items or pans that could be used like a juicer, steamer, fondue pot or wok. Include recipes that would be useful for your choice of gift. Example: if you gave the juicer you could include a fruit basket, recipe book and set of fruit juice glasses or knives and cutting board. Top off your presents with them being wrapped in creative eco friendly ways. Use reusable or recyclable containers and wrappings. Send bake goods and other desserts on reusable trays or baking pans.
We hope some of these ideas will get you thinking about how you can give and have a great "green Christmas".
