Poetry: Dedicated to a friend

by Joann Brosnan

TUESDAY MORNING - SEPTEMBER 11

They never met, those friends of mine

Though they lived but blocks apart

Walked the same avenue

Took the same train

And their city was in each heart

That Tuesday morning dawned, clear and fine

And one of them was a bit late

His mother had visited

Made blueberry muffins

And two were left on the plate

He stopped to take them on his rush

To reach his subway line

He was late, so late

So he lived, that day

My other friend was on time.
