Reflections: Emotional relief

by Donna Devane

Created on: November 08, 2008

Emotional relief is easy if you take it step by step rather than attempting to go from way down in the dumps to pie in the sky.

At some point in life we all feel down and out and many wonder how to get out of the not so good feelings into something that a single ray of sunshine can come through.

First realize that your thoughts are the reason for your emotions. Feelings always follow emotions and one thought leads to another similar to it.

You can track this by thinking backwards through the process that got you in this present feeling place. You started out with a simple thought of disappointment, frustration, anger, etc and you continued to feed it with similar thinking. The more you think a certain way the more your feelings fall in line. In no time at all things begin happening to prove that just what you are thinking and feeling is true.

In order to change this wild horse into a tamer ride you must find a better feeling thought.

Wherever you are in thinking and feeling at this moment, find a thought that feels a bit better. Don't reach for the top of the mountain, just a tiny better feeling step.

For instance, if you are feeling really angry then think a thought that feels frustrating. Frustration feels better than anger.

Now that you are in a tiny bit better feeling place reach up again for a better thought. Try for something that feels like disappointment. This is better. It's not the greatest feeling thought but you are making progress up the scale.

Stay with each step for three minutes allowing your feelings time to move into line with your thoughts.

Now from disappointment move on to anxious. You are ready for things to feel and be better. Anxious feels better than all the other emotions.

Now to move a bit further up the emotional ladder. Reach for a thought that feels hopeful. Things can get better, they always work out. This will work out to.

Ah, there's even more relief in this type of thinking. You have thought yourself out of the darkness and the light is beginning to shine through a little.

Now from hope let's move into trust. Based on your experiences in life you can trust that things will change, this situation will pass and you will come through braver, wiser and more knowledgeable.

Stay with hope for a while until you really feel this emotion. The longer you stay with a certain line of thinking and feeling the faster and easier more thoughts that are similar will appear to you.

From hope to knowing is a bigger step. It is the step that allows you to decide to feel good. At this point you know that you are the one responsible for how you feel and what you attract into your life experience.

You can begin now consciously choosing thoughts that feel good to you. You will notice quickly when your thoughts and feelings are out of line with how you wish to feel and think.

By repeating these steps as often as necessary you will discover a simple and easy way to find emotional relief at any time in all circumstances.
