The origin of the satanist meaning of 666

that the writer of the Apocalypse was a true prophet, in which case the Satanist has a rather unpleasant future.
Secondly, the possibility that Satanic forces might win, and in winning face the problems that plague all minority administrations when they take power. Suddenly having to make, and consequently follow, the rules, while the opposition are free to take whatever action they choose to hamper them. (James Blish covered this subject well in "The Day After Judgement", and I have no need to reiterate his points.)

It must be considered also that if an individual from early second century were transported to the present day, would they see modern society as anything but a procession of horrors? Would they look at the modern church and see the end result of two millenia of Christendom, or would they see only splendid temples and graven images?

The late Aleister Crowley, who identified with the Beast, took the Magical name "TO MEGA THERION" (The Great Wild Beast) which in the Greek system added to 666, to promulgate his "Law of Liberty". This would no doubt seem Satanic to early Christians, as it certainly did (and does) to some contemporary ones.
However, Crowley was not a Satanist: indeed he found the concept of Satanism rather amusing, as is clear from his writings.
