The origin of the satanist meaning of 666

Satanism is purely a Christian Heresy, so the meaning to a Satanist is exactly that which it would be to a Christian, though there would be some variation in the point of view.
I have attempted to deal with this below, though not being a Satanist (or a Christian) I might have missed a point or two. There are certain differences between the Church of Satan, Temple of Set, Nine Angles and Luciferan Brotherhood and I have left these out as not really relevant to this article.

Obviously the number 666 is given importance from its inclusion in the Apocalypse of John, where the reader is told:
"Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six"

This seemingly confusing statement is clear if you understand that before numerical systems were created, each letter of the alphabet had a value; thus words and phrases had values. The concept of zero was a much later creation.
In Mystical tradition it was felt that two words or phrases that had the same value would of necessity contain the same meaning, although at times discerning that identity might take significant amounts of meditation. (For example, in Hebrew, the secret name of God has an identical value with that of Unity and that of Love; therefore these three concepts are identical.) This process of analysis and synthesis is the basis behind all Kabbalah.

This process is believed to have begun in ancient Greece and spread to Israel, since the Hebrew word for the process, "Gematria", is not Hebrew in Origin, and is compellingly similar to the Greek "Geometria" which describes the process in Greek.

It is perfectly clear from the original writings that the beast referred to is a man, not an institution, nor a country, nor any of the other explanations that have been cobbled together over the centuries by individuals looking for scriptural authority to support their prejudices.

The Beast as presented by the writer of the Apocalypse acts as a sort of herald for the individual usually referred to as the "Antichrist", who precipitates the final battle of Armageddon (named for an historic battle site in Israel).

The true Satanist would therefore regard 666 as a beacon of hope, while looking forward to the rise of the Antichrist as the promised messiah, hoping that the outcome prophesied in the Apocalypse is purely propaganda rather than true prophesy.

They must, however, have a certain amount of trepidation on two counts:
Firstly, the worry
