Animals have a way of finding their way into our homes and our hearts. Being part of a family and sharing a loving relationship, that's what makes an animal a pet. Once you have included a precious pet in your family, having to part with it can be truly devastating. Life presents us with many situations that are beyond our control, and having to give up your beloved pet may come as a result. Although losing a member of the family is difficult, there are things you can do to make this heartbreaking time a little more bearable.
Right now you're a ball of emotions. There's probably a lot of conflict going on in your head. You know this is necessary, but you're second guessing yourself, having doubts and are wrought with guilt. This is to be expected, after all you're giving up a devoted friend and family member, not an old piece of furniture. Although it is hard, try to keep your anxiety and apprehension in check. Your pet can sense your emotions and will follow your lead. This makes the situation more stressful for all involved. Keep things as normal and routine as possible.
Use every resource possible to help you find a good home for your pet. Start by asking family, friends and neighbors if they've got room in their home and their heart for your pet. This would be ideal, as you could still visit with your pet. Another option is to check with your vet. A lot of owners will let their vet know when they are looking to add another pet to their family. The vet can put you in contact with perspective families. Ask around at work and have your children inform classmates that your pet needs a good home. You never know who may be looking for a new companion. Puts ads on the community bulletin boards and place one in the paper. If all else fails, and you must resort to taking your pet to a shelter, ensure it is one with a no kill policy.
When you think you have found your pet a home, do your research. Just because someone offers to take your pet doesn't mean it's in the best interest of your pet. This is a family member, so ask questions, just like you would before hiring a babysitter for your child. Find out if they live in a house or apartment, whether they have children and other pets, if your pet will be kept indoors, and any other questions to ensure your pet will be in good hands. Feel free to ask for a reference from their vet, and ask to see their home. Any good owner will be more than happy to oblige. There's nothing wrong with being selective when it comes to the health and happiness of your beloved pet.
Be sure to take all of pet's belongings to their new home. A familiar bed, his favorite toys, food and even that old beat up blanket will help him to feel more comfortable, and make the adjustment a little easier. Supply the new family with all medical records and a complete health history to ensure they are aware of all pertinent medical information.
Having to give up your beloved pet is painful, but sometimes there's no other option. Ensuring your friend goes to a loving family, and will be happy and healthy, will help to lessen the pain. Although circumstances may prevent you from keeping your pet in your home, nothing can prevent you from keeping him in your heart.
