Short stories: Moonlit walk

by Jon Coe

Created on: November 07, 2008

Her silk like fingers slid perfectly into the contours of my icy hand. As we walked along the wooded path to the river, I felt the pit of my stomach warm like a freshly lit lantern, then that feeling bubbled up into my heart and into my consciousness.

The moon suddenly brightened and as it did, a long shaft of pure silvery light shone through the trees, seemingly bathing and cleansing each step that we took. Sounds of crisp leaves crushing underfoot were muffled by the light that filled our eyes and the breath that we both shared.

As I stole a glimpse of Michelle's face, the moon's glow highlighted her chiseled features and made her look more beautiful than ever. I turned slowly to Michelle and whispered into her, "I love you."

Michelle turned her head to mine, "I love you too."

With this, a commotion on the river, as if to applaud, spread like the sound of a falling tree landing comfortably upon an embankment of ivy. The sound of midnight
