Diabetes is one of the toughest diseases to battle. Without treatment, Diabetes can take the best of us by destroying our kidneys, heart, and so forth. It calls for "balance" in our bodies in what we digest: if we digest too much sugar, our blood sugar level would likely be on the rise; if we digest less sugar in our diet, we would be prone to high blood pressure.
Like Diabetes, our spiritual life calls for balance in terms of how we live our life on a daily basis. The food we digest is not physical food, but the understanding we get from meditating on God's Word, the Bible. In the Word of God we find godly principles for right living in God's sight that are practical and true. They are applicable to us in relationship with people, people in authority, our spouses, parents, siblings, co-workers, children, and ourselves. Psalm 1 talks about a person meditating on God's Word is likened unto a tree planted by the rivers of water. Its roots are firmly established because where it is planted is providing it with nutrition it needs to grow and bear good fruits. The balance is only detected when the fruits the tree bears are good. What I mean by "good" is referring to that which is consistent with the nutrition provided by the rivers of water. In other words, God is the Rivers of water and what He provides for us (His Word) should bear good fruits in us. Anything that does not exemplify Him is not from Him but from a different Source.
God's Word speaks about an adversary, the devil. John 10:10 says that the devil comes not but to steal, kill, and destroy. To defeat the purpose of God's Word and His will for us, the devil has to twist God's Word, choke the life out of us, and leave us helpless by the roadside. He doesn't want you and me to enjoy life, to live right, and to love God and His Word. He hates people with balanced spiritual life. By destroying us, whom God so loved that He gave His only Son to die for, is just the devil's way of getting back at God.
To have a balanced spiritual life is to be relatable and transparent. You can't be too spiritual by using words like "Thou art", wearing black gowns, getting a title (e.g., priest, Pharisee, Sadducee), and holding fastly to religious laws and rituals; you also can't be too un-spiritual by partying from Monday to Saturday leaving Sunday out for church, and by not living according to what you claim to believe. A balanced spiritual life boils down to our faith: what do we really believe in?
