Going out to eat seems to be an unnecessary luxury these days. Living in the current economic crises, people are eating less outside and are even bringing a packed lunch from home. There are however ways to save money on eating out. In some cases you can save even more money by eating outside than cooking food in you own home.
You are going to have to do more homework instead of rushing out to go and eat. People still have to eat and by being a bit more conscious of where the money goes, you can still frequent restaurants.
Keep eating out for special occasions.
Instead of going to a restaurant once a week, save these kind of outings to celebrate special occasions. Some body's birthday, a promotion or one of your children's graduation day will be remembered more fondly if eating out is not an everyday experience.
Share appetizers, huge main meals or the dessert.
Let's be honest, A person can only eat so much. By sharing a starter or the dessert you will not only save some money, but you will spare yourself a bloated stomach. If you cannot finish your food, do not be shy to ask for the left overs. You can have it for lunch the next day. After all, you have paid for it.
Skip an unnecessary appetizer or dessert.
You have saved and waited for ages to go and have a nice meal in a proper restaurant. Do not overdo it by ordering everything that takes your fancy. Rather choose one dish that you can enjoy fully instead of ordering unnecessary food. For dessert you can always have an ice cream at half the price from the ice cream parlor across the street.
Keep your eyes open for new restaurants.
You can save money on eating out by trying out a new restaurant. New places sometimes lower their prices to attract customers. Apart from saving money on eating out it is also nice to try out a new place.
Keep your eyes open for specials.
Some fancy restaurants also have cheaper lunchtime menus to fill the restaurant during the less busy times of the day. Restaurants are also trying to attract more customers when money is scarce by offering different kinds of specials.
Leave the children at home. Enjoy a nice meal with your spouse all by yourself for a change.
Children usually do not finish the food that they have ordered and they can be disruptive not only to you, but also the other diners. Leaving them at home with a babysitter and fish fingers for supper every once in a while is quite acceptable.
Pack a picnic.
Instead of ending a family outing at the nearest fast food outlet, take your own food with you. This means that you will to able to explore areas that are more of the beaten track without a McDonald's around the corner.
There are ways to save money on eating out. You will still be able to go to a nice restaurant, but maybe not as often as you would like to. Never mind, one can always comfort yourself that not only are you saving money, but calories as well!
