However, as one moves forward in time and compares his later works, one finds that his paintings begin losing detail but convey a certain eerie mood that his previous drawings lacked. This eerie mood might be because the different parts of the painting seem more fragmented than before. In the same fashion one can observe Greek cultural values in the sculptures from the Greek Classic period. According to an article in Greeklandscapes.com (2002), during the classical years of Greek sculpture-making, the sculptures assumed different characteristics than in previous periods. One such characteristic is a more solemn facial expression to depict Greeks and dramatic expressions on statues depicting barbarians. This change was the direct result of a Greek belief stating that suppression of emotions was suppression of the emotions was "a noble characteristic of all civilized men" at a time when democracy and logic were established as the main form of government.
Subject matter as a representation of emotion and passion. At the same art exhibit mentioned earlier, one of the paintings on display caught my attention for its title and rather abstract shape. The painting is titled Becca Sleeping and it is a blur of blue sketchy and blotchy lines shaping the figure of a woman sleeping on her side. However, without reading the title, it is possible the audience would not know this is the figure of a woman. What got my attention specifically was the fact that I have been in a position before where while observing someone in their sleep, I felt an inherent desire to draw this person for the sake of manifesting in a physical object the emotions that I was experiencing at that moment.
