Age-appropriate toys for your toddler

It is often said that "play is the work of a child." Playing with age appropriate toys is a tool not to be underestimated in the growth and development of a toddler.

Play develops mental abilities such as problem solving and creativity while also helping to develop self-control - sharing, taking turns, and learning a sense of fairness. Play is the way in which children learn to make sense out of their environment and the many mysteries of their world.

The best toys for toddlers are ones that facilitate imaginative play. Too often we are swayed by the razzle and dazzle of a toy that does it all. While it initially may capture a child's interest, in the long term what fun is there in watching a toy that plays with itself? And what development is it promoting?

Toys such as doll houses, dress up chests and play kitchens, houses, etc. encourage role-playing and dramatic play. This gives the toddler limitless opportunities to try out new ideas and express themselves in situations that are familiar to them. Children who can pretend will never run out of things to do. When encouraged to enjoy their imagination, a simple object or toy is not limited to its created purpose, it can become anything!

Musical instruments or objects are wonderful at giving toddlers a release for energy and emotion. Even though their delight can often mean a headache for the parent or caregiver, these experiences encourage creativity and a love for music that will hopefully last a lifetime.

Every child should have a supply of arts and crafts materials. These items not only provide a creative outlet but also allow children to experience various colours and textures. Art supplies can be purchased at a store or home made. Crayons, markers, paint, chalk, clay or modeling dough, yarn and glue, paper, stamps, sponges, cardboard, wrapping paperthe list goes on and on. When it comes to art if you provide the supplies and guidance, a toddler's creativity will take over and lead them to all sorts of joyous discoveries.

Toddlers also need toys that facilitate the development of their muscle groups. Riding toys, wagons, walkers etc. will help a toddler gain strength and stability in their large muscle groups. While blocks, puzzles, books, etc. will aid in the development of their small muscles as well as provide focus and mental stimulation.

Whichever toys you choose remember that a child's learning is continuous. Every new skill developed is built upon previously learned skills. As they grow in their physical and mental abilities, be sure to present them with new ideas, toys and challenges so they can continue to enjoy learning!
