What it takes to be a ghostwriter

to emphasize the idea that he doesn't work well in groups and lacks the ability to get others to follow where he leads (if people followed him, he wouldn't be a "maverick," he'd be an innovative leader). Had I been McCain's communications director, I would have advised focusing on the "reformer" label, rather than the "maverick" one; "reformer" communicates many of the same ideals but does a better job of suggesting success and teamwork. This is what I mean by matching what the customer wants with what the customer needs; you need to redirect impulses without the customer feeling his or her ideas are being rejected.

Ghost writing is an interesting and often humorous path. I've been published as a historian, an outdoorsman, an executive coach and a sex advice columnist (for the record, I am none of these things in real life). I've written for both men and women (Incidentally, if you plan to get the majority of your ghost writing jobs via the Internet, I recommend a pen name of ambiguous gender.), and I've had a lot of fun along the way. If, after reading this article, you think you have what it takes to be a ghost writer, then I'd advise you to get as much experience as you can writing on a variety of topics so that you build up a resume that demonstrates your versatility. Good luck. I look forward to "not" seeing your name at the top of a lot of published articles!
