Let me start off by explaining to you what a film festival is. It is the presentation or showcasing of films in one or more movie theaters or screening venues. And, these festivals are usually held annually. In 1938, the world's first major film festival was held in Venice, Italy. Furthermore, most film festivals require filmmakers to pay an entry fee before their film is considered for screening.
First, we have Jean-Luc Godard, who is a French and Swiss filmmaker and one of the founding members of the Nouvelle Vague, or "French New Wave." He won a Silver Berlin Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival for "A' bout de souffle" (1960) and for "Une femme est une femme" (1961). This is the one of the world's leading film festivals with the most reputable media events in Berlin, Germany.
He went on to win a Golden Berlin Bear award at the Berling International Film Festival for "Alphaville, une e'trange aventure de Lemmy Caution" (1965). He even won a Pasinetti Award at the Venice Film Festival for "Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux" (1962). Founded in 1932, the Venice Film Festival is the oldest flim festival in the world. Again, the Venice Film Festival awarded Jean-Luc with the Special Jury Prize for "Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux" (1962) and for "La Chinoise" (1967). He was also awarded the Career Golden Lion award for a 1982 Lifetime Achievement. Last, but not least, he received the Golden Lion at the Biennale Venice Film Festival for "Pre'nom Carmen" (1983).
Next, Lajos Koltai is a Hungarian cinematographer and film director. The Holocaust drama, "Fateless," encountered lots of success on the film festival circuit. It was nominated for a Golden Berlin Bear award. It was also nominated for Best Score and Best Cinematography at the European Film Awards. Furthermore, "Fateless" was on the list of 58 countries as potential nominees for Best Foreign Film. In 1999, Koltai also received a Golden Frog nomination for "Leggenda del planista sull'oceano.La" (1998). He even received a Golden Berlin Bear nomination from the Berlin International Film Festival for "Sorstalansa'g" (2005).
Born in New York City, Martin Marcantonio Luciano Scorsese is an award-winning film director, writer, producer, actor, and film historian. He is also the founder of the World Cinema Foundation and a recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1997. He won a Golden Palm Award at the Cannes Film Festival for "Taxi Driver" (1976); a Best Director Award, also at the Cannes Film Festival, for the Best Director Award for "After Hours" (1986). Founded in 1946, the Cannes Film Festival is one of the world's oldest and most influential and prestigious film festivals. Mr. Scorsese also won a Venice Silver Lion for Best Director at the Venice Film Festival for "Goodfellows" (1990).
The second of four brothers, Hayao Miyazaki is a film director and screenwriter and character designer of animated feature films. Born in Toyko, Japan, he won the Golden Berlin Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival for "Spirited Away" (2002). Furthermore, Miyazaki also won the Career Golden Lion award for 2005 Lifetime Achievement, which is the highest prize given to a film. I had to include this one because I love the movie, "Spirited Away." It is so magical and thought-proviking. Miyazaki is an extremely talented film director. His character design is so carefully detailed and perfectly outlined. Isn't that what most film directors strive for? Perfection?
