Marketing and advertising in the present US market and internationally is very expensive. Advertising on the main medium of television and cable networks can run in the six or seven figures dollar amount especially depending upon the time slots of popular programming. The advertising costs are higher when a particular show or event such as the Super bowl are aired nationally. Many stations earn ad revenue with corporations buying 60 second commercials on these popular show time slots.

How can small business compete with large corporations unlimited resources, well the answer to that question is "no" it cannot compete fairly.

There are a few ways of getting free marketing from traditional media such as television and print media. The best free way of reaching mainstream media such as a news networks is to write an amazing press release about your company. Press releases are articles about a business, event, or even a new concept; these PR articles are written to and for the general media and are free. The article has to be written with the media as a target audience and should always answer five basic questions in the article piece, for example, the who, the what, the where, the when and the why and sometimes the How. This should be written within the first paragraph of the article and should be written in a manner which will attract the attention of the media outlets. The article should be news grabbing and news worthy, if it is deemed as such, the journalist will contact the author of the article, interview them, and check on the facts to write a news story on the business or subject. Media news outlets always use these press releases as ideas for their stories and articles.

Another free medium are local free classifieds that run free party ads or personal ads with optional web links. There are business ads available for a small amount of capital.

Bulletin boards and community centers are great ways to advertise to students and colleges.

The internet is not traditional media but has developed into a new popular medium and a widely spread new media stream. There are many ways to advertise on the internet with companies such as You tube. You tube allows anyone to broadcast and promote their business through online videos and make money by showing videos on their blogs and websites. The internet has created new popular media outlet known as social networking which has created sites and blogs such as face book, bebo, my space, and twitter. These social networks create interaction between the authors of the site with its readers; you can amass a list of friends by interacting with fellow bloggers and chatters. Create your own web page or company blog then network with the online community. There is no better advertising then word of mouth and chatting with fellow online chatters can spread the message or information about your company. Finally, there is the old way of networking that involves pounding the pavement leaving business cards everywhere, creating flyers and leaflets and distributing them to the community.
