Who is virtuous?
We denote many esteemed qualities, and rightfully so, to parents who have sacrificed for their children. We admire those who risk life and limb to protect another from falling debris, raging waters or fiery deathtraps. They are our heroes. We praise one who would serve others through ministries, delegations or official posts. Without them, suffering might have gone unchecked.
But less recognized are those who, through a glorious bounteousness of spirit, cannot help but share the happiness they feel and the wonderment they perceive in living.
These precious souls enter and exit our lives without accolade, medals or awards. Yet, their caring, quiet presence becomes woven into our daily existence. They are the stalwart, the steady. Those who are quick to offer assistance; whether it be to clean up after a company luncheon or to run to the store for forgotten birthday candles. We recognize them as co-workers who remember that we had a dentist appointment, and offer to get soup for lunch, in case our mouth is sore. We rely upon them, because they are the thoughtful, prepared, who bring handi-wipes on a bus trip, "just in case." We see them daily, without recognizing them. They hold doors open, stop for pedestrians, or tell us "good morning," with a smile. They notice everything, it seems; from someone struggling with too many packages to another who dropped their wallet. We welcome their gentle touch or sympathetic smile when we have suffered through painful or embarrassing moments. We call upon them to remain upbeat when our own moods falter and we become discouraged or depressed.
Their presence is so imperative, in fact, that we could seldom hold successful private or public functions without their thorough and supportive attentiveness to detail. Indeed, it is because they are so intuitively considerate and graciously quiet when serving us, that we are left free to enjoy private moments among ourselves.
And yet, these amazing people seek no praise. Most would be embarrassed if our attention were turned on them. They are our cheerleaders, who offer enthusiastic supportiveness from hearts that are brimming with fond wishes for their fellow beings.
These are the people whose friendly attributes are imperative to our lives. They provide kindnesses through subtle and refined means. They make us feel as if we were kindred spirits, all the while pouring us a cup of coffee, if we so desire. They too are mothers, sons, daughters and fathers, but it is their generosity that enriches us. Surely, these can be counted among the virtuous.
