Reflections: Investigating the incidence of boredom

Boredom can happen at anytime in a person's life and in any place to everyone.

Boredom is a matter of opinion and can mean different things to different people. To an adventuress person boredom could be taking a holiday to Hawaii and lying on the beach sun bathing. To an intelligent person, boredom could be having no idea of what next to do once they have achieved all that they have set out. Or to a hardworking class citizen who has worked more than sixty years for the same company. Boredom would be not having a job anymore or a sense of purpose and a reason of why they should get up in the morning. And to the young, well boredom would be inviting the wrong type of person for a fun night out and finding out that they are not as interestingly fun as you first thought.

What I really find interesting are those who talk about it. You have proactive people who reach a certain point in their lives, achieve the goals that they set themselves to achieve and when the first signs of boredom set in. They are off again, planning new things actively trying to complete their new goals and life carries on.

Then there are the "Mona Lisa's" as I call them. Boredom sets in and they complain about it. Everyone has to know and when people oblige to try and help them find something interesting to do. They become a critic and disagree with every helpful advice given. Or they will kindly agree with your suggestions, but deep down you know they aren't really taking it in or will even attempt to do anything. These types of people just like to be heard for no other reason than the fact that they have nothing else to do.

But what I think is the worst case of boredom is when you are sick and bed ridden or in hospital recovering. Life just seems so grey and depressing during such a period that some don't recover from that sense of feeling for months or years on end. And that is when the comfort food sets in and in one case scenario the epidemic of obesity starts.

Life can be tough and seem like it is just never ending. But I always see that Boredom is a time period to stop and re-evaluate one's life goals. There are even times when boredom is actually a good thing. You should never get too caught up in the rat race of working life. Stop and take the time to just rest. It might be boring to some, but much needed. And for people who tend to be workaholics, boredom can be forced upon them because they work too much.

So overall Boredom can be both good and bad, it depends on how you see life.
