Product reviews: Lush Melting Marshmallow Moment Bath Melt

As I watched pieces of marshmallows melting into a swirl of hot water on a late December afternoon I visibly relaxed and felt myself begin to warm. No, I am not talking about hot chocolate. I am talking about my introduction to Lush Cosmetics and their Melting Marshmallow Moment bath Melt.

The PTA at my son's school raffles off many baskets at their December holiday fair and last year I was lucky enough to win a basket of Lush products. One of the most intriguing products in the basket was a Lush Melting Marshmallow Moment Bath Melt.

This product looked just like a pink cupcake.

I did not know anything about the Lush brand when I won the raffle so I went to their website to learn more about the products that I had received. The website describes the Marshmallow Bath Melt as "musky marshmallow body oils" and as "sweetly scenting your body with marshmallow and marigold". I could not imagine combining the scents of musk, marshmallow, and marigolds, but the bath melt did seem to have a pleasant aroma so I was willing to give it a try.

From what I saw on their website the Lush products are rather expensive so I decided to cut my bath melt in half in order to get two baths out of it. The 3.5 ounce bath melts sell for $7.95 on their website and are meant to be used for one bath. The website highly recommends the bath melts for people with dry skin.

The bath melts are described as slow dissolving. This is a very apt description. I added half of the bath melt to the water as I filled the tub. The water turned a very pretty shade of pink as it started to slowly melt and give off foam. This was my first experience with a Lush bath melt and even though it was described as slowly melting I did expect that it would have dissolved into the hot water by the time the tub had filled. This was not the case. I ended up crumbling the remaining of the melt between my fingers to help it dissolve before I entered the tub.

The bath water did not feel slick from the cocoa butter or the almond oil that is added to soften your skin. This was nice since it also did not leave on oily residue in the tub. Unfortunately, it also did not do much to soften my skin.
In fact, my skin didn't feel any different that it does after a shower.

The scent of the bath melt changed as it melted. It changed from slightly sweet and fruity to sweet and musky. It wasn't the soft musk smell that I was expecting. It was a strong, wet musky scent that didn't really go well with sweet scent. Luckily, even though the musk scent was strong, the overall scent was not overpowering and did not linger on the skin.

Based on my experience with this product I would not recommend the Lush Melting Marshmallow Moment Bath Melt. It did not moisturize my skin the way a product made from cocoa butter and almond oil should. The main reason to use a bath melt is for their moisturizing abilities.
This bath melt did not meet its moisturizing responsibilities and turned out to be an expensive way to make the bath water pink.
