A convertible car not only looks sporty, but it can also be lots of fun during the warmer months. For years we've been fed horror stories of why convertibles are unsafe. Since the advent of the convertible car, people have laid claims to the weaker body structure of a convertible. And the most obvious safety concern, a dropped top during a wreck. The fact is, in the early days of convertibles these concerns were valid and serious. So serious that in 1976, Cadillac claimed to be making the last convertible ever with their '76 model Eldorado. However, engineers in the 80's found ways to make convertibles much safer. Today, convertibles cars can be enjoyed with a sense of security, not fear. Here is why.
If you look at national auto-accident statistics, you will see that deaths in convertible cars are less than 1%. Granted, there aren't a high amount of convertibles on the road. But this number is also low because of the improved safety of these cars. What is most encouraging about convertibles is their extremely low likelihood of a rollover during an accident. Even lower than an SUV! This safety convenience is credited to a convertibles low center of gravity. Due to the light-weight tops and the increased body weight of a convertible car, they are unlikely to roll. Another safety feature on modern convertibles is the increased strength of the windshield posts. These posts are made of a special type of steel that will support the weight of the car laying upside down and much more. Keep in mind, even with the improvement and added safety of convertible cars, they are still more dangerous than a sedan. Remember, they still lack that ever-so-important structural feature, a roof. Passenger ejection from a convertible is something that can never be improved. But there is a quick-fix for that problem: Always wear a seat-belt!
If you are really wanting that beautiful convertible, that perfect dream car, I'd say go for it! If you can get past all the inherent squeaks and rattles of a convertible, safety should not be a concern. Extra maintenance is also something that comes with that shiny new ride. Convertible owners are encouraged to wash their top, whether vinyl or cloth, very often. Waterproofing is also a recommended step for your drop-top. Interior care will also increase due to the inside of your car being exposed to the elements. These are just a few things to keep in mind when considering a convertible. The truth is, these cars are pretty darn safe and a load of fun. If safety is your major concern, fear not! Just strap on that seat-belt, drive with some sense, and have yourself a blast!
