Kira couldn't keep her eyes off the man sitting next to her. He was so muscular that his muscles made bulges in his shirt. She had seen him at Cross Country practice a time or two, laughing with the other guys about some not actually funny joke. He was number one on the team, maybe it was the pure Korean blood that flowed through his veins, but, more likely, it was the strength of God. He had been a Christian since he was 5 years old. He had had a tough time holding onto his faith while he was fighting near Iraq. Submarines in the Navy were some really rough places, and extremely tough to keep a strong religious faith in.
When Anker had been released from the Navy after only four years of service, he decided to head into college, and follow his life dream, to help the animals by becoming a veterinarian. That was when Kira and Anker had first laid eyes on each other. Time had stopped as they stared into each others eyes. Anker couldn't believe that something so incredibly beautiful could be on the Earth. She was slightly taller than he, only by an inch or so, but he could still see all the life and happiness in her dark blue eyes. Her curly long brown hair flowed down her back, and her smile was amazing. The best thing was, she didn't appear to be wearing make-up, something Anker was firmly against. To him, make-up was like a mask, covering all the true beauty that lie beneath. Way too soon, time went back to normal, but both people were paying so much attention to one another, and none to where they were going. Kira tripped over the foot of a college guy enjoying his ham and cheese sandwich, drinking a Pepsi, sitting on a park bench, then, Anker tripped over her leg. He fell directly toward the student and made the cup of Pepsi fly three feet into the air, as it came back down, it threw its contents all over Kira and Anker. Both of which, after collecting themselves, sat up, and started laughing.
Ever since the first (funny?) meeting, Anker and Kira couldn't keep their eyes off one another. However, they kept their distance. At Cross Country practice, Anker would be with the guys, and Kira with the girls. They didn't talk much, didn't eat together during lunch, or even wave upon sight. Simply a look of wanting to be together, but neither having the courage to ask the other out on a date. That was, until the week before Linfield College's Spring Fling Dance.
Kira was sitting on her bunk in Jane Failing 310. Her English teacher had assigned the class 100 pages
