Car games to occupy kids while driving

A family trip in the car is something we love. In fact our children usually get bummed when they find out that we are flying somewhere. They would always much rather drive. But of course, they have to be entertained. Here are a few ideas that will keep your children from being bored.

First, you have to always have plenty of snacks. Food is always underestimated in its ability to entertain. I try and pack not only foods that they get to snack on at home, but some special foods. Usually taking a car trip is for vacation, so why not let your children splurge. Give them the race car fruit snacks, or the princess cookies they always beg for at the grocery store but you never buy. They will be happy and quiet while enjoying them. But remember to buy a seat cover to put under their car seats to protect your car.

Second, if you have a portable DVD player, use it. If you do not have one, consider purchasing one. Today you can buy a DVD player for under $100 and you will always have it for any future road trip. Then if you do not have DVDs that your kids enjoy, think about getting a mail order DVD rental subscription. There are no expiration dates this way and you can mail them when you are done with them, no matter where you are. That way you don't have to worry about losing them along the trip.

Third, bring their electronic game players. Sure, they are not always the most educational, but this trip is for fun, right. Let them play quietly to their heart's content. It is the best time for it. I can guarantee you that when you reach your destination they will have plenty of energy and will want to run around, so let them play their games now. We actually have three Nintendo DS players, so the kids and the one parent who is not driving can link the players up and play against one another. The kids love beating us at Mario Karts.

Lastly, have plenty of paper, coloring books, activity books, and crayons. But don't leave the crayons in the car when you arrive at your destination. We've had melted crayons on the seat before and it is not fun. You can also purchase portable lap trays for the kids' laps for under $20 at places like Target. I usually put a plastic tub in between my kids for all their activity supplies. It keeps things from flying around the car and it makes it easily accessible for them.

I hope this has helped all those families wanting to head out for a vacation, but who cannot afford plane tickets. Car trips are fun ways to make memories and spend time with your kids. But remember, it is a vacation, so let your kids enjoy themselves.
