The war with Japan was complicated. They were expanding their territory to the mainland. They have no oil or iron they need to import. We had their country closed in with our ships, isolating millions of their troops on mainland China.
In China they used chemical weapons and biological weapons on defenseless Chinese villages. They use thousands of Chinese prisoners to incubate the Black Plague then killed them and drained their bodies of the blood to infect rats which they dropped on Chinese villages. The scientists were given immunity for their cooperation and research so they did not go to the war crime trials or even get in the news!
They treated prisoners worse than people treat animals. In the Philippines they were especially brutal. Yes, women were used as prostitutes for the Japanese solders.
We had a group of planes unofficially fighting the Japanese in China before Pearl Harbor. I believe they did bomb Okinawa before Pearl Harbor! The commander got permission to hit mainland Japan but Japan attacked Pearl Harbor first.
Japan did not really expect to "win" they just expected us to sue for conditional peace. They thought we could not handle the big losses or come back from Pearl Harbor so fast.
Even after the bombs they thought they could fight on. They expected the allies to invade and they had 1 and one half million fresh, well-fed troops on main- land Japan and thousands of tanks but only enough gasoline for about 6 months of fighting. They were looking forward to the invasion because they knew there would be 10s of thousands of allied casualties! They thought we would back away and sue for a conditional surrender from Japan which is all they wanted, to keep their government and Emperor.
The Japanese and the Allies would have potentially lost one million lives in a Japanese invasion and Russia would have gotten a piece of Japan, the bombs prevented that!
Little did they know that the US president had no intention of replacing the Emperor. The second bomb convinced the Emperor to surrender defying the military that would have killed him to prevent the surrender, but had lost support of the people and their own troops. One military leaded killed himself because he felt it was the end of Japan that the US would force a US like government and take over, like they do to their victims.
Sad, just a big misunderstanding!
Yes, they should admit and apologize for the atrocities and then leave it at that. They have totally denied wrong doings in the Pacific war (even with war crime trials). (Germany has apologized for Hitler over and over again.) Recently a Japanese Admiral was quoted as, "It was a war there is nothing to apologize for."
They are dishonoring themselves by running from the truth, and this cloud will always be over their head if they keep hiding!
