Short stories: Moonlit walk

by AWayWithWords

I guess you already know that when somebody asks if you 'wanna take a walk' at midnight, you're not just going to get polite conversation. But then again I was in high spirits, the sort of state that alcohol puts you in; fiery, confident and ready for anything. But I hadn't drunk that much...well, maybe a little more than I should have. It doesn't matter now. Blame it on the stupid drink, or my own naivety, either way I accepted his invitation and dissapeared into the night with the small, well built stranger.

He was polite at first, chatting to me casually about how well the party was going and how nice all the guests looked in their evening attire. The noises of the party gradually faded behind us, the tinkling glasses and the occasional burst of laughter falling on the tree's behind us. The night air was cool but he set a quick pace, taking the well-trodden paths that circled smoothely through the small wood behind my bright house. 'Perhaps he just wants to get to know the area a little better', I judged, 'He has only been living here a few weeks...'

'So how are you liking the neighbour hood?" I ask gently, letting my voice smooth down to hit only slightly detectable seductive tones. He was pretty good looking after all.

"Oh, I'm liking it just fine. Pretty quiet at times but the people are making up for that." He glanced at me sideways and I felt the old butterflies of my teenage years swarm up, giving me the sweet rush of adrenaline that I hadn't recieved since...well...since my teenage years I guess. And that was a while ago now. I smiled, but the nerves shook it up into a grimace. Blushing, I returned my stare to the murky path before me. Suddenly he gasped;

"Don't you think the moons just beautiful?" I looked up. We had come to a small clearing, and I knew that the children from the village had made a treehouse not far from here. The tops of the wary oak trees sighed gently in the wind, their leaves rustling, whispering childishly to eachother about the two strangers standing in reverance beneath. The moon stood bright above them, it's moody light filing down, chastising them for acting so young. It reached out to us, sparkling preciously upon the air, it's light moving down our bodies until it caught my dainty dress shoes sticking in the leaves. I shivvered. Now that we had stopped the night air was beginning to catch against my bare skin. I suddenly realised how skimpy my dress was.

I had bought it the week before, in the sale ofcourse. It caught my eye immediatly, the black silk flowing temptingly off the rail. I had pulled it up against me, smoothing it over my curves, and watched in awe as the silver beads along the neckline reflected in my eyes. Love at first sight. It seems to occur often in Topshop, Anne Summers and River Island.

'Are you cold?'

I tore my gaze away from the moon and lent it to him. My, my he was actually pretty good looking. Or maybe it was just the alcohol, the party atmosphere and the excitement of stealing away to a romantic spot with a man I'd only spoken too once. And that was to invite him to my party. His short brown hair sat flatly on his head, so my perfection-seeking eyes fell straight onto the jewel of his face. His. Oh, how big his eyes were. Oh, how round, how impossibly brown. They pulled me in closer, closer, until I could feel his arms locking around my small waist. Adrenaline rushed again.

'You didn't answer my question.' His eyes bore innocently into mine.

'Oh..erm.' All i could see was his eyes.

'I'll take that as a yes then shall I?' They glinted mischeviously as his hands dropped a little lower. He pulled me in roughly, so that I was tightly pressed up against him. Suddenly all the school-girl excitement welled up inside me as I felt his chest beating tightly against my own. I could feel him on me, everywhere yet his eyes stayed locked on mine. I tried to remind myself of my age, of how time had taught me to control my emotions, but my mind failed at the last moment as his lips moved warmly onto mine. All it took was one heartbeat and I was taken. My head whirled about my surroundings as his lips moved faster with mine and suddenly I had it. Pulling away, grinning naughtily at his surprised stare, I tugged him roughly to the children's treehouse. To be honest it wasn't really a treehouse, that is, it wasn't up in the trees. But whatever it was I really didn't care for as I threw myself against its rough walls and pulled him onto me.

It was probably a good job that the dress had been in the sale. It was a little...well, ruined for my secret entrance back into my house. He had lent me his jacket, especially considering that it was he who had ripped it in his thirst for our moment. Making it back to my befroom with no one noticing my reappearance, I pulled it from my dirty skin. Fishing around in my wardrobe, not really caring if anyone noticed the change (maybe it was down to alcohol then), I pulled on the same dress but in dazzling red. The new sale price really had been very good...and one must cover oneself for accidents.

Pulling the last leaf from my hair I screwed it up into a rough bun and quickly reapplied my smudged makeup. When I finally made it back down to my party he was gone and everyone else was too drunk to have noticed my absense and change. I went back to smiling and slurring my 'hellooooo!'s' while hugging every person I could see. Yes, maybe it really was the alcohol.
