Analysis: After a Brilliant and Historic Campaign, Barack Obama Faces Major Challenges

Barack Obama out-organized, out-campaigned and raised more money than the best politicians America had to offer to become the 44th president of the United States of America. In so doing, he also achieved the historic goal of becoming the nation's first African American president. His victory over Arizona Senator John McCain brought public tears to the eyes of veterans of the Civil Rights Movement including the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

However, the 47-year-old Obama now faces a series of monumental challenges. Eight years of President George Bush's policies and neo-conservative ideology have left the nation with two unpopular and un-winnable wars, the worse financial crisis since the Great Depression of 1929 and a national debt so large that it will require the taxes of both our grandchildren and great-grandchildren to pay it off.

The New York Times appropriately labeled the Obama victory "Northing short of phenomenal." It was a victory that just two years ago most people could not even imagine. Recognizing the challenges he faces, Obama delivered a sobering, "yes-we-can" acceptance speech in Chicago's Grant Park Tuesday night. He told the tens of thousands gathered "The road ahead will be long, our climb will be steep." He is right. Most economic and political analysts agree that climbing out of the mess the Bush administration is leaving will not be easy.

Wednesday morning Obama began naming the people who will help him take control of the reigns of government. John McCain gave a truly gracious concession speech and President Bush pledged "a smooth transition." Thus, the stage is set for change. It is a change, however, which flows from the trials and tribulations of the Civil Rights Movement. It symbolizes a sea change in U.S. race relations and assumptions. Indeed, it is a safe assumption that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is smiling.
