Poetry: Autumn

by Jules Roberts

Created on: November 05, 2008

Autumn Leaves.

Autumn leafs

fall from the trees

scattering colour

blend with each other.

Twirl in the wind

go up and then bend

around and around

then come back to the ground.

The colours are amazing

like a log fire blazing

reds and yellows and oranges and browns

little flames spinning and breathing a sound.

They crack and crinkle and whisper and hiss

and continue their dance till they fall to a crisp

no fireman behind them to put out the blaze

but the caretaker chases them for hours and days.

Then one day you awake and the colours not there

just a chill freezing grey lingers on in the air

you look out and shiver and want to stay home

now autumn has passed and the winter has come.

The mind blowing colours have faded away

the trees are stripped bare now and nakedly sway

and down to the roots they peacefully sleep

while around them the winter buries them deep.

I wonder if a tree could dream

remembering colours it has seen

and spring, like an alarm clock ringing clear

shakes it awake to start its new year.

(2005).
