The Effect of Graffiti on Commercial Buildings
Graffiti is defined as markings such as initials, slogans, or drawings, written, sketched, or spray-painted on public, leased or rented, and private property.
There are three types of well known graffiti being graffiti art, gang-related graffiti, and just plain graffiti.
The effect of all types of graffiti on property has brought about the need to fight graffiti on private as well as public property.
Graffiti art was first seen in New York in the 1980s, and is perceived as religious, inspirational, and revolutionary by many.
Positives:
As mentioned above, graffiti is perceived as religious, inspirational, and revolutionary by many. As long as it is allowed, graffiti art can brighten the view of certain public properties.
Negatives:
Graffiti art is a wonderful form of art, but it should not be created on property in which it is not intended. The professional look and value of commercial buildings can be easily diminished by graffiti regardless of the quality of the image because the consistency of commercial building paint and graffiti will most likely not match.
Gang-Related Graffiti
Gang-related graffiti is utilized by gangs for territorial reasons.
Positives:
There is absolutely nothing to gain from gang-related graffiti.
Negatives:
Gang-relate d graffiti is the worst type of graffiti. This type of graffiti is also costly to remove and not only diminishes the value and quality of commercial buildings, but also creates a sense of fear. This can have a big impact on a businesses' employee base and productivity.
Graffiti
The history of graffiti extends back to the ancient times during the days of the Roman Empire and Ancient Greece, but nowadays it is considered vandalism.
Positives:
There is also absolutely nothing to gain from plain graffiti.
Negatives:
While this type of graffiti doesn't necessarily create a sense of fear, it is costly to remove and does diminish a building's value. Plain graffiti is not artistic and is an inconvenience to look at.
In order to fight graffiti businesses must now utilize graffiti-resistant coating which mean businesses have to spend more money on commercial building painting services in addition to graffiti removal services.
Business and graffiti do not mix.
