Video game reviews: Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii, Xbox 360, PS3)

Guitar hero has been around for quite sometime now. It was a few Christmases ago when I got the original game which came out on the PS2. Here however is the game for the next generation consoles! This review is for the wii version which is slightly different from the other versions as I will expand on later.

The game is brought to us from NEVERSOFT. These developers are best known for the Tony Hawks series, which were very good games. NEVERSOFT belong to Activision who are one of the main third party game developers around today. Activision were the first game developers to be independent from the console makers like Nintendo. Generally speaking games published by Activision are going to have a reasonable level of quality. Also games only really get sequels if they sold well and were received well. This is the fourth game in the guitar hero series so you know it is going to be good!

There are two areas of the game to speak of. The controller and the game itself. I will talk about the controller first:

With the game you get a specialised controller that makes the game what it is. The controller this time is in the shape of the famous GIBSON Les Paul. It is in white with a black neck which gives it that wii feel! This controller is different from the PS3 and XBOX version. With the wii obviously the most famous feature is the wii-mote. Here the wii-mote slots into the guitar controller itself. The guitar uses the functions already present on the wii-mote to give it that bit of extra flare. The first feature is the rumble pack in the wii-mote. Whilst playing the game the guitar wii vibrate at certain times (when you get something wrong) which isn't what a normal guitar would do but still it works! Next you can hear things through the little speaker in the wii-mote. These are only small sounds such as beeps when you get something wrong but still it makes it feel more like the bad note originates from the guitar itself. A really nice feature. There is also an analogue stick on the guitar so you can select different options in the games menus. I would have liked to see the wii-mote utilised here as well letting you point the guitar at the screen to select the options.

The game play itself involves five buttons on the neck of the guitar. These buttons are different coloured and are placed on the individual frets of the guitar. Also the is another button located where you normally strum. This isn't a button the you push down. it is more like a lever that can move back
