to suit the authors particular story. Of course the author can just make it up....
After they meet up, whether it's the first time or the millionth, they take a journey that must be kept going without too much boredom. The journey is the entire reason the readers are still getting the books. It's the journey that for me is the hardest to keep flowing, but flow it must. So, i reread and rewrite up to the spot that I'm stuck at. Of course this is true of any story. The other thing is if the story is set in the past or present (or even going back and forth between the two), the research must be done so facts are at least semi-correct. It doesn't take much to see that Romance novels set in the past must end in a way that does not give too much credit for something to someone who never even existed. Of course, present day settings are a little easier as the author can and usually will "write what they know." Any stories set in the future or in a different dimension or world altogether are completely set up by the imagination of the author. Or say the readers are led to believe.
The breath-taking romantic journey could have several twists and turns or rely on one member of the couple to be completely pig-headed and obtuse. It could be the journey revolves around a misunderstanding that was never cleared up. I have never reached the end of a journey that I didn't like. Maybe it left me pining for a story for a different member, but it usually ends with some kind of "happy ever after," at least until the next book. The endings can be different, too. Sometimes it's the marriage ceremony that ends or the epilogue where they have three kids('course, sometimes it's those kids that started the whole journey.) Other novels end with them admitting their feelings to each other and having a very mushy scene. It hardly ever ends so the main couple doesn't get together.
There are really only two things that an aspiring writer need remember. The first I've heard from other authors, "Write what you know." The other is something that I believe in my heart and with my whole heart.
A story has a life all it's own. Sometimes its hard to describe a particular part or to turn a massacre over to the romance, but it will find its way. The authors are vessels for millions of billions of stories to be told. Sometimes a character the author loves must die or go to jail. Sometimes a character the author hates turns out to be the hero. The author cannot arbitrarily run the story. They are the story's record-keeper. Writing it to increase others enjoyment of the story they hold inside is the author's job. Writing a Romance is easy as long the author listens to his or her characters instead of writing it their way.
An outline is easy. Appealing an unknown set of readers to tell the story is an art all its own.
