The search for an industrial coating contractor can be a difficult decision; however, by looking into the certifications & memberships of a contractor, quality work & safety can be better ensured, thus saving a facility time and money.
Certifications
The main body that certifies industrial coating contractors is the Society for Protective Coatings, or SSPC. The SSPC has a variety of certifications available to contractors. The two main divisions of certification from the SSPC are the Painting Contractor Certification Programs (PCCP) and the Coating & Lining Inspection Company Certification. At the highest level, the best contractors can obtain the Protective Coatings Specialist Certification (PCS). All of these certifications set standards for industrial coatings in regard to safety, procedures, materials, health, and environment. By obtaining these certifications, a contractor can demonstrate their experience & commitment to quality.
Memberships
There are many groups to which a coating contractor can belong. These groups represent the interests of coating businesses, while also serving as an industry benchmark. Here is a list of just some of the key groups:
ASM International - Advances industry, technology, and applications of metals & materials
Inter-Society Color Council - Professional society in the field of color
National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) - Professional society advancing the knowledge of corrosion engineering & science
National Paint & Coatings Association (NPCA) - Represents paint & coatings manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors
Other groups include the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America (PDCA), Painting & Decorators Foundation (PDF), and the Industrial Painters Coalition (IPC).
The benefits to industrial coating contractors having certification and membership are many. First, it ensures safety to those working or living in a facility, as well as to the environment. Second, through the SSPC's continued evaluation, contractors who do not meet these standards are subject to discipline. Finally, these certification & membership programs help contractors learn as much as possible about their industry, thus improving their service to the customer. By evaluating these certifications & memberships, any building owner or facility manager can be assured that their contractor has the experience, knowledge, and equipment to get their coating job done right.
