Today's economy has left many of us in a pinch. It simply is not feasible for all of us to run out and buy the most fuel efficient hybrid vehicle on the market. The good news is that you can still save gas driving your existing vehicle with little or no additional investment.
Driver Habits
The most immediate way you can save gas is by changing some of your driving habits. The way we drive plays a big role in how much gas we use each day.
Plan Ahead: Before you drive anywhere, you must plan ahead. Watch or listen to your local TV and radio traffic reports, as they will help you avoid traffic jams. Also, consult online map services to find roads that offer fewer traffic signals and stop signs. What you want to find is the route that provides the steadiest flow of travel.
Speed Kills: Faster speeds mean higher engine speed or RPMs (Revolutions Per Minute). Once you begin to exceed 55 mph, the time saved is not worth the extra gas used. Maintain a slower' and steadier' pace and keep your RPM levels down.
Consolidate Trips: Think about what trips you need to make throughout the upcoming week and try to consolidate your trips as much as you can. Also place your trips in order so that you're not driving back and forth across town. The less you drive the more gas you will save.
Play the Gas Game: Local news reports will tell you if gas prices are expected to increase or decrease within the next week or month. When gas prices appear to be rising, fill your tank up while the price is lower. If prices begin to drop, buy your gas in smaller increments, such as one-quarter or one-half of a tank at a time, this will help to ensure that you're not spending more than you have to. This tactic works best for those that live close to gas stations.
Car Maintenance
Keeping your car in good mechanical condition is very important and will have an affect on your gas mileage. Of course you'll save even more if you can perform car maintenance on your own.
Fluid Changes and Tune-ups: Refer to your owner's manual and change your engine's fluids as often as recommended. Fresh spark plugs, plug wires, air filters and PCV valves also help to ensure that your engine maintains peak efficiency to save gas.
Tire Pressure: Check your tire pressure often and maintain the maximum pressure specified by the tire manufacturer. Low tire pressure means your car's engine has to work a little harder to move your vehicle down the road.
Reduce Weight: If the back of your vehicle is acting as a secondary storage space, clear it out. Extra weight added to your car will increase the amount of gas you use. Keep only a basic emergency kit for road emergencies.
Give these tips a try and see what a difference it makes in your monthly gas bill.
