How to save on gas without buying a hybrid vehicle

As the economic forecast grows increasingly cloudy, many Americans are finding it necessary to cut expenses. Fuel efficiency has become the main selling point for new cars, and more and more hybrid vehicles can be found on the roads. But what if buying a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle is not an option? There are still plenty of ways you can trim your fuel consumption:

1. Carpool:

If you live near a co-worker, consider sharing a ride to work. By driving half as often, you will use half the gas every week for your commute. If you find two or more people to carpool with, the savings is even greater.

2. Consolidate trips:

If you're going to the grocery store, think about what other errands need to be run. Maybe you need to go to the bank or mail a package. Sure, it could wait until tomorrow, but why not get it done while you are in the area? This way, you save both time AND gas.

3. Lose the road rage:

Aggressive driving not only boosts your blood pressure, it cuts down on your fuel efficiency. To get the best gas mileage, accelerate and brake smoothly. The less you step on the gas pedal, the more gas you save.

4. Maintain your vehicle:

Keep up to date on oil changes and tuneups. Change your air filter regularly, and keep your tire pressure where it should be. Not only will properly inflated tires help you save a bit on gas, but under-inflated tires are a safety hazard.

5. Drive slower:

Cars are most efficient at speeds below sixty miles per hour, so resist the urge to zoom down the highway.

6. Reduce drag:

Remove anything that interrupts airflow around your car: roof racks, bicycles, etc. Open windows also create drag, especially at high speeds.

7. Minimize use of air conditioning/heating:

Both use up extra fuel, so if you can get away with using vents or keeping the heat on low, do so. Air conditioning is more efficient than open windows at higher speeds (above 40mph), however, so if vents aren't enough on the highway, opt for the a/c.

8. Buy cheaper gas:

Most cars are designed to run on regular gasoline; paying extra for premium won't do your car or your pocketbook any favors. Learn which gas stations have the best prices. Neighbors, friends, or websites like GasBuddy.com can help you find the best prices in your area. Just remember: you won't save any money by driving six miles out of your way to save two cents per gallon. Stick with stations that are on (or slightly off) your route.

9. Put your car on a diet:

Extra pounds in your car take extra fuel. Remove excess baggage from your trunk or back seat. (Be sure to leave the spare tire, the jack, and any emergency kits, of course. Extra gas mileage won't help you if you get a flat tire.)

10. Avoid driving altogether:

The best way to save gas is to walk, ride your bike, or take public transportation. Take a walk to the corner store if you need milk. If you live in an area with buses or subways, use them whenever possible.

Every little bit helps, and the more of the above tips you are able to impliment, the more money will stay in your wallet.
