Friends are valuable parts of our lives. Without friends life would be very lonely and boring. Each friend performs a special and unique role.
There are friends that you simply have fun with. Your relationship with these friends is not super deep. You do not sit around confessing all your deepest thoughts to each other, but you call them when you need to go out and have a good time, when you want to lighten your mood or relieve stress by doing some fun activity. You may share a common interest with this friend and enjoy doing the same activity or eating at the same restaraunt that none of your other friends will go with you to. These friends are important because we all need people in our lives that we can enjoy doing things with, that will be goofy with us and that we can have fun with without worrying about being their therapist.
There are supportive friends that you call on when you are having a crisis and you need to hear encouraging words or advice about what to do. These are the friends that you know will always be there for you. They are responsible and dependable. They are loyal. These friends have been with you through the good and the bad times of your life and no matter what is going on with you they are your cheerleader. Friends like this are important because we will all experience events in our life that leave us devestated or unsure of which direction to go. These are the friends we can turn to during those times.
There are also those friends that are able to encompass both the fun and the supportive role all in one. These are very special and there are often only a few select ones in each person's life. These are the friends that know you intimately, that know what you are feeling even before you tell them. They can tell when something is bothering you, they know what will make you happy and what will make you sad. They know what matters most to you in life. In addition, they are friends that you have a blast with because you know each other so incredibly well. You can be in a room with this friend and not have to say a whole lot or you can be doing the most mundane activity and still have fun becauase you are doing it together.
Each person comes with a unique personality and set of life experiences and they each find their own special way of affecting our lives. The one thing all friends have in common is that they are there for you and help you in some way, whether it be to make you laugh, think or run a marathon with you. Friends enrich our lives because they are the ones we share experiences with. Life would not be as much fun if we did not have friends. There would be no one to reminisce with or to share inside jokes with. It would be very lonely without friends.
