Leadership trumps race and gender

Are you ready America? If you have been paying attention, then you realize that we are witnessing what is probably the most historical presidential race in the history of the United States. One that not only includes the first African-American candidate but also the first woman vice presidential hopeful as well.

I have always been proud to be an American, but this year's election has given me even more reason to hold this great country in high esteem. This election is not only exciting, but with its unique blend of candidates it sends a message to the rest of the world - America really is still the land of opportunity. A land where anyone can be anything they want to when they put their will and effort into it.

But does the fact that you are the first African-American candidate for the White House, or the first female to run for vice president qualify you as a leader? Hardly. Whether you are Caucasian, African-American, Asian, Hispanic, male, female or undecided has absolutely nothing to do with your ability or qualifications as a leader.

What makes a leader is the ability to make tough decisions based on what is best for the country regardless of how it may affect his (or her) popularity. A leader is willing take a stand against any that would seek to cause harm to our country and not back down, and a leader should have vision and the ability to make others see it and be willing to follow him. Gender or race have absolutely nothing to do with any of these qualities.

A true leader will demonstrate passion, bravery and compassion for those he leads. The opposite of that can be seen in those who are self-serving, indecisive and more concerned with popularity ratings than in making the right, and sometimes difficult, decision. Their promises change more often than a red light in the center of Washington D.C. When a candidate is promising us change, let's hope they aren't talking about the number of times they are going to change their mind.

Certainly this year's presidential race is going to make history with its many "firsts" in gender and race, but let us not forget that it's really about choosing a leader. A leader that is going to be faced with making some difficult decisions and dealing with tough times; times that require a steadfast leader. This year, when America goes to the polls, hopefully we will put aside gender and race and choose the candidate that has demonstrated the qualities of true leadership.
