Safety tips for traveling with a pet

Traveling with your pet can be a delightful experience if you follow a few simple safety rules and use common sense. If you're traveling by plane, the airlines will give you guidelines to follow for the safe transport of your pet. Rail travel, similarly, has rules for the transportation of pets.

If you're traveling by car, there are some simple steps you can take to make the journey easier on you and your pet. First, ensure your pet is secured in the car so they will not be thrown around by turns, sudden stops or [heavens forbid] a collision. For dogs this can mean being inside a kennel or wearing a harness that can be secured to to seatbelt system. For cats a kennel is essential to the safe and sane transportation of your pet. Inside the kennel, they will be able to relax and you will not have to worry about them being underfoot, or scratches should they become startled. All other pets can travel in their normal cages, provided there is sufficient care taken to secure the carrying case.

It's important to stop and allow your pet to "stretch his legs". You should also make plans to give your pet the opportunity to drink water during the trip. If your pet suffers from motion sickness or travel anxiety, your Vet has medications that can help to alleviate the symptoms.

Be sure to take your pet's usual food with you so s/he will have part of their normal routine intact. If your pet is the playful sort, bringing some favorite toys along will be a useful and comforting distraction. If packing space allows, your pet's bed/resting pad should also be taken.

By following these simple guidelines you and your pet can enjoy many happy miles of travel together.
