Pets are part of our families. We often hate to leave them home with a pet sitter, or at a kennel, when they can come along with us on our travels. Preparation is the key to a successful trip with your pet.
Veterinary Visit - Your pet should be healthy and up to date on all required vaccinations. Discuss the potential need for a travel sedative or alternative holistic calming solutions. Collect any necessary medical documents.
Food - Pets travel better if they have the food they are used to eating. Pack a large enough supply for the trip. Consider packing bottled water.
ID - Travel destination, and home addresses, should be marked on the crate. These two addresses, and phone numbers, should also be affixed with your pet's normal identification tags. Microchip your pet if possible. If your pet is flying cargo, clearly label their crate with "live animal" signs, arrows pointing to the top of the crate and a personalized message which makes your pet seem like something more than just luggage to airline personnel.
Accommodations - Confirm that you have a place to stay with your pet during your trip. There are many websites, and books, which outline pet friendly accommodations. Call to confirm any pet regulations prior to setting out on your travels.
Restraints - Whether in an automobile, or on a plane, it is always best to confine your pet during travel. If they are not used to being crated then let your pet explore the crate in a positive situation prior to travel. Leave the crate in a common area for a few weeks before traveling. Open the door and place a few treats, and toys, inside. Airlines have specific regulations on the types of crates suitable for both cargo and cabin. Call ahead. Confirm that your crate meets specifications. In an automobile they may also be restrained with a pet specific seat-belt or a barrier designed for your vehicle. When outside of their crate, or the automobile, they must be on a leash.
Temperature - Temperature is a concern on both flights and for travel by car. Book flights for times when temperatures will be less extreme. When driving ensure that your pet has adequate ventilation. Consider adding sun filters to your windows.
Advanced preparation will make the trip a safe and happy one for the whole family. Enjoy the time you spend together.
