Congratulations, you're expecting a new baby. It's a time of excitement and change. Don't forget your beloved pet who was your first baby and try to make the transition easy for all your family members.
Make sure that your pet is as healthy as possible before the baby arrives and up to date on all vaccinations. Have their nails trimmed. If there are any behavior issues, work with a trainer to resolve these. Having your pets spayed or neutered will also make them a little mellower.
If you have friends who have babies or toddlers, invite them over so the pet gets used to small people. Always make sure to supervise the child with your pets for the safety of all.
One of the most worrisome things for your pets when the new baby arrives are the new sounds. Acclimate them by playing tapes with sounds such as crying. Turn on the mechanical swing or other devices that you will use when the baby comes home in advance to get your pet used to them.
When you are getting the baby's room ready, let the pet see what is being done. If you are planning on keeping the pet out of the room, get a mesh baby gate that the pet can still see what is going on in the room. Put any lotions or powders you are going to use on the baby on your skin and let your pet smell these.
Carry around a doll baby before the real one comes home also will help your pet get used to the idea of a new addition. Let the pet see the doll in the stroller and even take them for a walk with the stroller.
The new baby will be bringing a new scent into the household. Have someone bring a blanket or item the baby has worn home from the hospital before the baby comes home and set it down for the pet to smell and lay on if they wish.
Because the new baby will take up a lot of your time and attention, make sure to set aside special time for your pet. When you bring the baby home, have someone take the baby and say hello to your pet. Have a treat ready for them. With a little care, the new baby will be a positive experience for the entire household.
