The Internet has become a viable source in procuring travel arrangements. Via the travel website the intending traveller can select their destination, book accommodation, arrange transportation and plan an itinerary from the comfort of their home.

At the click of a button it is possible to plan a routine vacation to a popular holiday resort or travel into uncharted territories to experience the wonders of a foreign land. The travelling individual or group will have four main tiers to address when booking their trip.

* The preferred season of travel

It may only be applicable to travel during the "peak" holiday season - school holidays for family groups - or financial constraints may deem "off-peak" travel as the more viable option. The first step is to narrow down the preferred season of travel.

* The choice of destination

Domestic or international travel? Although the initial suggestion of booking a period away from home may rest with travel plans originating within the home country it is also worth considering that, due to the competitiveness of the travel industry, travel to a foreign climate may be secured for a similar cost.

* Means of travel

Flights, cruise, rail or car, or a combination package such as fly and drive? Limiting the preferred means of travel may limit the choice of destinations, although this can aid the search, if for example the plan is to take your own vehicle.

* Accommodation

Hotel, bed & breakfast, vacation rental or camping? What choice is available during the intended period of travel and will this be economical and suit personal requirements.

On selection, the "tourist" may then decipher the "extra" prerequisites of their planned vacation.

* Planned itinerary

Exploration on arrival or planned activities? Research via the Internet can reveal a selection of recommended attractions to visit.

* Catering

Self-catering or dining out. What choice of eateries are available, within budget and have any restaurants received positive or negative reviews?

* Entertainment and activities

If you like to party at night, is there a club or bar? Travelling with children? Are there age-related amusements? Gain an insight into the available visitor resources by searching the locality of the intended destination.

It must be noted that certain characteristics in planning a period of travel are inter-linked. Your choice of destination may be influenced by personal objectives: Rome, to view the Colosseum, a city break in Paris for a romantic get-a-way,
