Helping your pet cope with storms and loud noises

It seems appropriate that I'm writing this article just before Bonfire Night although it doesn't last for just one night anymore. Fireworks seem to be let off for weeks before and after the 5th of November and that's not good news for us pet owners. Thankfully our cats aren't bothered by storms, fireworks or loud noises however for some it is a terrifying experience. I've been with animals when they were in a distressed state and it's not a nice thing to have to see. Don't forget that they have much better hearing than we do and they don't have the understanding that the bang of a firework or a thunderclap isn't going to hurt them.

When there is any loud noise going on outside keep your pets inside. Close all the windows and doors and if possible the curtains as well. Don't forget about cat flaps! If you know there is going to be something loud happening later take your dog out to the toilet beforehand. Ensure that your pet is identified either with a collar and tag or microchip so if the worse happens and they do escape they have a good chance of being found afterwards. If you have animals which are kept outside in enclosures such as rabbits or guinea pigs bring them inside the house. If that isn't appropriate put them in the garage or shed.

Signs of fright include shaking, trying to hide, panting and howling or whining in dogs. In more extreme cases they may also lose control of their bladder. Don't become angry with your pet when it is in this state, you will only make the problem worse and it doesn't deserve to be punished because it is scared. At the same time do not make too much of a fuss of them as it will reinforce their anxiety. Stay with your pet and stay calm. If it comes to you for reassurance then give it but if it chooses to hide away somewhere don't force to come out, just make sure that you are close by. Turning on a radio or TV may help cover some of the sound. Try not to leave your pet alone as you may find when you come back that they have destroyed the house!

If there is a particular place your pet likes to hide make sure they have access to it. You could always create a hiding place for them. It should be enclosed and comfortable with a blanket or bed and their favourite toys. If the problem is very bad speak to your vet as there maybe something they can prescribe. An animal trainer or behaviourist might also be able to help.
