There is no question! Rescuing an abandoned or stray pet is the only way to go. There is no guarantee that an animal will be healthy at either place. The shelter will be cheaper and if you need medical care, you will not have to dig down as deep as you would, after purchasing a pet from a breeder.
There are thousands of disgarded animals in shelters-all over the world. We do not need more unwanted pets. Shelters around the USA have many, many purebred animals. They get dumped, just like mutts. Mutts usually are the better way to go anyway! They do not have the interbreeding that purebred dogs and cats have. They are healthier and do not have the hip and leg issue that many purebred dogs have.
People dump their pets at shelters for a variety of reasons: moving, divorce, no time for them, bored with them, allergies and more. Of course, some are for aggressive behaviors. A decent shelter will not sell an animal that displays inappropriate behaviors.
Talk to the volunteers. They know these animals very well. If it was an owner turn-in. they will have some details, providing that the owner was willing to share. If not, the volunteers have spent time with the cats, dogs, rabbits, pocket pets, birds, etc. and have a better idea about their temperament, disposition, character and more.
If you are lucky enough to live near a shelter that has a foster program, you will get some good information from the foster parents who have had these animals (usually puppies and kittens) living in their homes. An older animal makes a wonderful pet, too. They are calmer and have their personality already sealed. They do not need to be potty-trained. They are not as likely to chew, claw, mark and do other distructive behaviors.
Ask questions, spend time with your soon-to-be pet. Bring the whole family, so everyone has a say so in picking out the perfect new family member.
Give a rescued animal a chance! Save a life! Bring joy into your life and their life. You will never regret it!
Remember this animal is going to be part of your family for a very long time! Welcome it with love! You will be glad you saved his or her life!
