Taking a toddler to the dentist can be a challenge. They don't like to be told what to do. Oral hygiene is important for your child's smile as well as their overall health. Many children and adults are scared of the dentist. Ensure their first appointment goes well. Before you book your child's first visit, see my list of tips below.
1. Choose a pediatric dentist- Does your dentist have a lot of children patients? Do they have that special touch? If you don't think your dentist is right for your child try a pediatric dentist. Dentists are easier to find then doctors. You can usually shop around!
2. Development- Each child matures at a different rate. They all go through their own fazes. Book their first appointment at an appropriate time. Avoid separation anxiety!
3. Practice- Before you take your child to the dentist practice brushing their teeth at home. Sing songs or play games. Let them brush your teeth. Get them used to opening their mouth!
4. Set a good example- If your child knows their parents aren't afraid of the dentist they are usually more willing to go. Have your child come to the dentist when you have your own check-up. Let them experience the sights and sounds!
5. Booking- Make sure to book the appointment at the right time of day. Kids are cranky when they're hungry or tired. Cancel the appointment if your child is sick. Ensure their first visit goes well!
6. Comfort items- There is nothing wrong with bringing your child's comfort items to the dentist. Just avoid bringing a pacifier. Having their bunny to hold or their blanket to cuddle can make the experience less stressful!
7. Do it together- If your child is scared to sit in the dentist chair alone, have them sit in the chair on your lap. You can help keep them still or hold onto their hands. Make them giggle and open their mouth!
8. Information- Let your kids know what will happen when you visit the dentist. Tell them what the dentist is for. Read a relevant story or watch a kids show. Let them know there is nothing to fear!
9. Tell the dentist- Inform the dentist of your child's personality. Are there things that will make them more comfortable? If your child likes numbers have the dentist count their teeth. If they like buttons let them play with the chair!
10. Rewards- Don't bribe your child to visit the dentist but reward them for good behavior. Booking regular check-ups for your child is easier if their first experience goes well. Behavior rewards don't have to be big. Try stickers or sugarless candy!
Your child's first visit is an important experience. Try to ensure that this visit is positive. Get them excited in advance and tell them what to expect. Bring things that will make them feel comfortable. Tell the dentist about your child and pick an appropriate time. Play dentist with your child at home. Try a pediatric dentist and brush their teeth every day. Use rewards for good behavior. Good luck!
