Training your cat is possible!

It will be a long time before a cat will fetch a stick on command, or make a cup of coffee, but it really is easy to train a cat to use a litter tray or to stop scratching and biting.

There is more chance of success if you train your cat from an early age but older cats are capable of learning too. It is important to remember that all cats are different and it will take time and patience to have your cat behaving as you wish. Spend at least 10-15 minutes per day teaching your cat a new behaviour.

The easiest thing to teach a cat is how to use a litter tray. If your cat has a regular spot outside of the tray where it goes to toilet, put the litter tray in this place so your cat associates the area with their bathroom habits. If you can't get a tray in your cat's favourite place, put down some silver foil as cats don't like the texture on their paws. It is also advisable to clean the area thoroughly to remove the cats' scent. A cat will feel comfortable going to toilet where it can smell its own scent.

The most difficult thing to teach a cat is to stop biting you or scratching your sofa to shreds. It can also be the most fun thing to teach as there is a lot of playing involved. Hunting is a natural instinct for cats and this is the main reason they bite you. Make time for two or three play sessions a day with cat toys, such as balls or pieces of string, where your cat can burn off some energy and practice their hunting skills. If the cat does bite you whilst playing, show them it hurts and is not acceptable behaviour by saying no' in a stern voice, walking away and ignoring them.

Be sure to treat your cat every time they correctly perform a new task. You can buy healthy treats from any pet shop, or simply give them a small amount of tuna or cheese.

Never try to teach your cat more than one new behaviour at a time as this will only confuse them. A cat is a great friend. Spend as much time with them as you can and have fun teaching them. You may even learn a few things yourself!
