Teens views: How to avoid being grounded and suspended

by John Gregory Myers

Created on: November 02, 2008

I remember my Mom and Dad yelling, "Just for that, you're grounded". Grounded?. Sure, I'm ground. So, what are they going to do?

Keep my on a leash? During the school season, the parent (by most state laws that I know of), cannot keep a child from attending school. So the parent HAS to let them out the door at least five day a week.

And then whathire a "watchdog" to keep and eye on them? So for 8 to 10 hours, they are on there on.

Free. And, trust me, they will do as they please during this time period.

During the 70's when I was in grade school and high school, and I thought to myself, "what's the big deal? So I have a curfew and have to be home by a certain time! I have all day to do what I want!".

At the ripe age of thirteen most of my delinquent behavior was performed in broad daylight. I'm referring to smoking cigarettes and pot, continuing to hang out with the roughest people you could image. These people were drug dealers, thieves, ciminals with long track records with the law, you name it.And there were many things I did with these people (without influence or peer pressure) that I willingly did that shocked my parents, and some of things I did they still are unaware of to this day.

We're not referring to the sort of normal things a juvenile delinquent would participate in; I'm talking about dealing drugs (in major quantities), breaking into houses, stealing guns, holding up small food marts at gun or knife point, breaking into cars to steal (what was then) stereos and 8-track players, vandalizing cars, ripping people off with bad dope, and breaking curfews regardless of the consequences. When my parents were away for a few days, I would hold wild parties at their house. Major parties, inviting all the people mentioned above.

So, on weekends especially, sure I would abide by the "grounded" issue but I let the "iinvited the wrong crowd to come to me. The door was open. I was at the point where I didn't care what trouble I was in. As far as skipping class: When I skipped my first class in High School or would miss a class, they needed a "note" from my parents. So, the brilliant genius I thought I was, I would take the note and re-write it in my OWN handwriting; so they never knew the difference, unless the principle aroused suspicion and finally called to verify the absence. I was caught a few times and suspended, but I didn't care. I knew after the suspension period was up, I would be off and running again.

I'm not sure how the suspension or how some families
