graphical interface, connect to the internet, and let your children play. Your system won't be bugged an iota :D.
If you are a more power user, you may to try some for powerful stuffs. Two of the most famous are Debian and Fedora, both of which are very powerful and have high commitment with freedom. They are both configurable, and have reputation for stablity and power. I am really fond of Fedora, which always provide state-of-the-art stuffs. Debian is a classic distro, which is the basis of many many distros. Try them out!
Now, when your skill in GNU/Linux improves, or you pride your programming skill highly, try some high-power toys. The introduction is Sabayon, which provides a hybrid system: it installed pre-compiled applications, but compile everything from that point on. Gentoo is a very powerful toy, which I really enjoy tweaking. Slackware is one of the most secure system on Earth. Linux From Scratch is, well, something that i have not tried (yet, I will, some day). It is not quite a "distro" per ce, but rather a guide to build your whole system. Anyway, I think Gentoo is really nice. You can tweak many many things, yet, it still (to some extent) strives to ensure that your tweaking will not wreak havoc. One note: beware, you may burn to much time on your system. Fun, but time-consuming.
Now, what do you want? Easy? Fast? On CD? Middle of the road? Power? Try! Happy Tweaking :D.
